I think that previous versions of Nvidia drivers have randomly caused the desktop to reset, though it's not happening at the moment on the two computers I mainly use (one desktop, one laptop). It's not entirely clear to me why, but anything that causes the desktop to be reset can do it, for example, Explorer restarting, resizing the desktop (this can happen if I access the computer remotely from another computer), sometimes installing a program or update. FYI, I have solved my problem by moving the icons one space away from the screen edges. Strange that I have never had a problem like that. Using RDP from a system with a different monitor/resolution can cause icons to move when logging back in normally. I think you can set it to run at boot and restore the desktop, but I find Windows messes the desktop only sometimes, so I run it as required.
